Apple formally launched its cloud computing service the iCloud on 6th June 2011 at the WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference). With the iCloud, Apple can sync and move files without a glitch among all the Apple compatible devices such as iPads, iPhones, iPod Touch, PC, or Mac. In other words, the iCloud enables all your devices to share data without being connected physically. iCloud is all set to replace Apple’s paid subscription service MobileMe. iCloud now offers the same services like e-mail, web hosting, calendars, and file storage free of cost and without the shortcomings of the MobileMe service.
iCloud means more storage space. iCloud stores everything and anything that is in the digital format whether they are your contacts, calendar, documents, e-books, music, videos, photos, and documents. iCloud has eliminated the need for file storage system. It not only automatically stores digital data but also pushes it out wirelessly to the various devices like iPhones, iPads, iPod Touch, laptop, or desktop. With the iCloud, your iOS devices are at the same time linked yet independent.

With iCloud, the music you purchase from your iPhone in iTunes gets stored in the iCloud and then forwarded automatically to all your devices. The iMatch feature of the iCloud matches the songs of the userwith the over 18 million songs present in the iTunes. This feature also upgrades the songs to a superior quality 256 kbps AAC DRM-free.With an annual subscription fee of $24.99,it is the only charged feature of the iCloud.

Although iCloud is known more for syncing your music, it has other features as well. For example, any contact added to your iPhone will automatically sync to your iPad or any other iDevice you have. Similarly, any change in your iPad will be synced to your iPhone. For instance if you stream photos or make any changes in your documents from your iPhone, your other devices will be automatically upgraded by the iCloud. However, photos can only stay for thirty days. The iBooks purchased are also sent up to the iCloud and from there to your laptop, desktop and other iOS devices. You can also bookmark or highlight any page and when you return to reading later even from another device, you can resume reading from the same text which you had highlighted earlier.

iCloud also has the "all access apps" so that next time you purchase any app from your device, the app will be automatically pushed to your other devices. In case you buy a new iPhone, all your old apps, and data will be pushed wirelessly on to your new device. The iCloud will receive a daily backup of the data on your iPhone and will update your other devices accordingly. Apple assigns you 5 GB of storage space when you sign up for the iCloud. In this 5 GB of storage space, you can store your documents, settings, data, Camera Roll, and mail. However, your music, books and apps plus your Photo Stream are not included in this free storage space.

Conclusion

iCloud is software developed by Apple to sync your data, music, and photos wirelessly and effortlessly by linking your iOS devices wirelessly. iCloud keeps all your devices updated with the latest changes made in any of your other devices. The backup feature makes sure the data from your iPhone is upgraded daily. It is speculated that iCloud will help boost Apple’s business.
